Freight two-section electric locomotive 2ES7 with asynchronous traction motors is designed to drive freight trains on 1520 mm gauge railways, electrified with alternating current voltage of 25 kV.
Able to drive a train weighing 9000 tons on sections with a flat track profile (up to 6 0/00) and a train weighing 6300 tons on sections with a mountain profile (up to 10 0/00).

The main advantage of this system was the absence of the need for rectification of the current, which made it possible to significantly increase the voltage and made it possible to use networks with a smaller cross-section and less frequently located substations. • Using alternating current of industrial frequency. The network is fed directly from the national power grid through conventional transformer substations. This allows the use of arbitrarily high voltages (typically 25 kV).
